Friday was a day when winter meets summer and clashes into a maelstrom of forces. Though rain threatened terribly all day, it seemed to be all around us, but did not hit our area of Sanford. Then last night around 6:30pm. The lightning and thunder came and brought the waterworks. It would pour for an hour or so, stop and begin again. It cleared at about 2am so I took a few photos of the nest to see how it stood, or floated. The Papa crane was standing all night, Mama crane steadfast over her egg.
This morning went out at 6am and then took pictures at daybreak around 7:am, the sun was trying to make an appearance and it showed the nest platform was intact and both cranes were adding more grass to build it up. There is hardly any marsh left. And it looks like it could rain again yet. From the photos you can see the difference of the day the nest was just built and last nights washout. Right now the sun is valiantly trying to take her place, but the clouds won't completely let her have her way. It is to get a lot colder today, the high is probably right now as the cold front has not deposited the chill. Tonight will be in the 30s, brrr. At least we know the water is too warm to freeze! Let's hope that little fat egg can make it two more weeks, that's all, keep yur fingers crossed...
